About HLPT: The Hispanic League of the Piedmont Triad (HLPT) was established in March 1992 by several professionals from various fields, including business, law, medicine, religion, and education. The initial objective was to foster diversity and raise awareness by serving as a liaison between the corporate community and the fastest growing segment of the workforce, Hispanics.
The 1990 census,
generally believed to be understated, had revealed the existence of over 76,000
Hispanics in North Carolina. By 2000, the Hispanic population had increased to over
378,00 residents. This number could increase with seasonal migrant
workers.
Due to this rapid growth, this workforce has been accompanied by language
and cultural differences
that present significant challenges. The HLPT has
been dedicated to identifying and addressing the specific needs of Hispanics
/ Latinos and providing assistance with health, legal, tax matters, citizenship and
naturalization
requirements, English as a Second Language, and referrals to bilingual
attorneys and
doctors. |
