Each year the Education Committee of the Hispanic League of the Piedmont-Triad (HLPT) and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company (RJRT) present the RJRT/HLPT Achievement Awards. This program was begun in 1998 when twenty-four excellent middle school students in the ESL programs at Hill and Wiley were selected to attend various summer camps. In 1999, awards and gift certificates were given to twenty-four kids from Southeast and Wiley. In 2000, the program was expanded to Kernersville, Meadowlark, and Hanes Middle Schools in a continuing effort to reach all of the Forsyth County middle schools with ESL programs. HLPT is a charitable organization dedicated to strengthening and improving the quality of life of Hispanics residing in the Piedmont Triad who have a need for basic services necessary to achieve self-sufficiency and integration into the community. At the same time, HLPT supports special events that enlighten and educate the general public about Hispanic customs and culture and demonstrate the value of the Hispanic presence in our community. Operating since 1875, RJRT is a Winston-Salem-based tobacco manufacturer that has a long history of supporting all types of charitable and philanthropic causes in the community. Recently, RJRT celebrated its 125 year anniversary by contributing $125,000 to local charities. Currently, RJRT’s focus is community involvement specific to children eighteen and under. RJRT and HLPT have each donated $1,500 toward incentive awards for Hispanic students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades at Wiley Middle School, Southeast Middle School, Hanes Middle School, Meadowlark Middle School, and Kernersville Middle School. Students will be given two rating forms apiece (see enclosed). These forms are to be given by the child to two teachers of his/her choice. These teachers will rate the students in January and again at the end of the year. The students’ ratings and grades will be reviewed, and selections will be made by a joint committee of representatives from RJRT and HLPT. Four to six students from each school will be chosen to receive the awards. The twenty-four winners will be selected based on the following criteria: academic record, attendance, effort, punctuality, improvement in English-speaking skills during the school year, behavior, and class participation. The awards will be given at year-end ceremonies with media invited (WS Journal, Hispanic newspapers, CAT TV). Each winner will receive a $100 gift certificate to Hanes Mall and a framed certificate award. The timeline is as follows: Early January Children are assembled and teachers/counselors/HLPT members explain the details of the awards. Letters and rating forms are distributed to teachers.
April 20 New rating forms are due from teachers. All necessary records on the applicants are given to Jason Underwood, HLPT. April 21- April 30 Applicants are selected for awards by joint RJRT/HLPT committee May 1 Winners are announced and contacted. There will be twenty-four winners equally distributed across the schools based on their populations May An awards day is held sometime during this month at each school. RJRT/HLPT representatives will be there to present the awards. Media are invited. The intent of our involvement with the schools is to provide incentives for the kids to give maximum effort in school and illustrate how their hard work will pay dividends in the future.
