HISTORY:
The impetus for the
Hispanic League Scholarship came from an appeal made by Dr. Joy
McLaughlin to
the Hispanic League Board of Directors in 1992. Dr. McLaughlin was an
English as a Second
Language teacher at Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, and had many
students who came
from Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries who were intelligent,
hard-working students who
were caught in the conflict of trying to survive in a new country and
trying to move ahead. Many times,
students were needed at home to help their families when someone was
needed to baby sit, they were
needed to translate for parents and friends at hospitals and doctor
appointments, and often missed
school for these reasons. In addition, families would often put pressure
on their children to quit school
and go to work to add to the family income. Dr. McLaughlin felt that if
there were incentives for students
to stay in school and attend school regularly, that it would be possible
for these students to succeed
and go on to higher education. She made the appeal to the Hispanic
League to start a scholarship that
made financial need and not academic excellence the basis for the
scholarship.
Although the board seemed interested, there was no formal move at that
time toward creating a
scholarship for these students. In 1997, Dr. McLaughlin initiated a
mentor program for high school
ESL students as a combined effort of Hanesbrand Inc. and the Hispanic
League. It was at that time, that
members of the League began to come into the high school to give
incentive talks to students. Julio
Berea came to the school and told the story of his rise to success from
humble beginnings. Other
members of the League also shared their stories and students were given
an opportunity to see what
they could accomplish if they stayed in school.
Two years later, Dr. McLaughlin became a member of the Board of
Directors for the League and began
work on the design and implementation of a scholarship for Hispanic
students. She recognized that
most other scholarships require citizenship for the applicants and
wanted to design a scholarship that
did not make that requirement necessary. At the end of a year of
planning, the Hispanic League
Scholarship was awarded in the spring of 2000.
The League enlisted the help of the Scholarship Foundation, a company
that would provide the
applications and make the final choice of winners. Funds for the
scholarship are provided by the
proceeds of Spanish Nite, an annual dinner dance attended by
individuals, businesses and
corporations.
The first year, there were two recipients; Hayluri Beckles-Palomares who
had been an ESL students in
1992 and Raśl Mosquera who had been an ESL students in 1999.
The scholarship requires that applicant be accepted to an institution of
higher education before
applying for the scholarship. Applicants must be in the ESL program in
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County
or have formerly been an ESL student in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County.
